Wolves Fight Back to Beat Burnley 2-1 as Clarets' Home Winless Run Continues

Posted : 17 October 2026

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Friday, October 16, 2026, ending a difficult week with three valuable Championship points. Fer López and Tawanda Chirewa scored for Wolves after Jamie Vardy gave the hosts an early lead. The result extended Burnley's wait for a home league victory to 21 matches.

Burnley started confidently and took the lead in the 20th minute. Vardy collected a pass from Jacob Bruun Larsen and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to score his first goal for the Clarets. The hosts had threatened earlier, but Wolves goalkeeper José Sá had already denied the former Leicester City striker with a fine save.

Wolves gradually improved after a difficult opening spell. Their equalizer arrived in the 39th minute following a costly mistake from Burnley defender Kyle Walker. The defender surrendered possession, allowing teenager Sean Neave to set up López, who finished with a low shot that went in off the post.

The visitors carried their momentum into the second half and threatened through Rafiki Said. Burnley struggled to maintain their early intensity, and another defensive error proved decisive in the 72nd minute.

Igor Julio lost possession in midfield, allowing Mateus Mané to create an opportunity for substitute Chirewa. The Zimbabwean forward kept his composure and finished calmly to put Wolves ahead. It was his first goal for the club this season.

Burnley attempted to respond but could not find another equalizer. Their defensive mistakes and inability to convert opportunities undermined a promising start, leaving manager Nicky Hayen facing renewed pressure.

Hayen admitted that his side had performed well during the opening 30 minutes but criticized the individual errors that led to both goals. He also expressed disappointment with the energy provided by his substitutes.

Wolves manager César Peixoto praised his players' mentality and tactical discipline. He explained that his team adjusted its pressing approach after struggling early and believed the visitors deserved the victory.

The win provided relief for Wolves after defeats against Middlesbrough and Bolton Wanderers. The team also faced an injury crisis, with Raúl Jiménez sidelined until January and Adam Armstrong unavailable because of a back problem. Peixoto made six changes to his starting lineup, giving 19-year-old Neave an opportunity to lead the attack.

For Burnley, the defeat continued a troubling run of form. The Clarets have won only one of their previous 23 league matches and conceded 21 goals in their opening 11 Championship games. Their last home league victory came against Leeds United in October 2025.

Wolves will take confidence from their comeback as they pursue promotion, while Burnley must address their defensive weaknesses and improve their home form to move away from danger.
