Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi is on the verge of parting ways with Besiktas after spending just one season in the Turkish Süper Lig. The defensive midfielder arrived in Istanbul from Leicester City last summer in an €8 million deal. He was widely expected to serve as a vital anchor to help push the club toward domestic championship glory.
However, the team endured an incredibly turbulent campaign and finished a disappointing fourth in the league standings. They ended the domestic football season a staggering 17 points behind the eventual champions, Galatasaray. This collective failure prompted the hierarchy to dismiss first-team head coach Sergen Yalçın.
The Turkish powerhouse has since appointed former Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Italiano to steer the club in a new direction. Reports suggest that Ndidi does not feature in the tactical plans of the incoming Italian tactician. Consequently, the club is eager to cash in on the player during the current summer transfer window.
Turkish media outlet Ajanshaber reports that a lucrative transfer to the Saudi Pro League is now the most plausible outcome for the midfield enforcer. Although the 29-year-old anchor remains under contract for two more years, concrete offers from top-tier European teams have entirely failed to materialize.
The combative midfielder was previously linked with an ambitious transfer to English giants Manchester United. However, a move to Old Trafford is now highly improbable after the Red Devils secured Ederson from Atalanta; the Premier League club has also shifted its primary focus toward West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes.
Ndidi will turn 30 in December and is reportedly ready to prioritize a final financially rewarding contract in the twilight of his career. Saudi Arabian clubs are perfectly positioned to meet his steep wage demands if Besiktas accept a reasonable transfer fee. With the market open for two more months, the Nigerian star has ample time to finalize his next destination.
