Robert Lewandowski will have to wait longer to make his Major League Soccer debut after Chicago Fire's home fixture against the Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed because of hazardous air quality caused by wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada. The match, originally scheduled at Soldier Field, has been rescheduled for October 6 following consultations between Major League Soccer, both clubs, local health officials and the City of Chicago.
The highly anticipated contest was expected to attract around 40,000 supporters and marked the return of MLS action following the World Cup break. It would also have reunited Lewandowski with former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller, who now plays for Vancouver, in one of the league's most anticipated fixtures of the season.
Lewandowski joined Chicago Fire from Barcelona after helping the Spanish club win the LaLiga title and was preparing for his first appearance in North American football. With Thursday's postponement, the Polish striker is now expected to make his MLS debut next week against Inter Miami, a match that is likely to be played without Lionel Messi, who is preparing for the FIFA World Cup final.
The postponement came as dense smoke from ongoing wildfires in Canada spread across several U.S. states, including Illinois, creating unhealthy air quality conditions. Similar warnings were issued across parts of the Midwest and the northeastern United States, with officials advising residents to limit outdoor activities due to elevated levels of fine particulate pollution.
