Wild Dogs Tear Super Eagles Apart as Guinea-Bissau Win 3-0 in Bissau

Guinea-Bissau produced a commanding 3-0 victory over Nigeria in their Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying clash in Bissau on Tuesday. The result moved the Wild Dogs to the top of Group L and handed the Super Eagles their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Renato Nhaga played him into the Nigerian penalty area. The forward finished with his left foot beyond Stanley Nwabali to give the hosts a deserved advantage.

Nigeria created opportunities to level before the break. Alex Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman, but Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Fernando Embadjé made an important save to preserve the hosts’ lead.

The Super Eagles struggled to find a response after the interval. Mama Baldé doubled the advantage in the 66th minute after receiving the ball from Mamadi Camará before firing a low effort into the net.

Nigeria coach Éric Chelle attempted to change the game with substitutions. George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika came on for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi in the 75th minute, while Ilenikhena later forced another save from Embadjé.

Guinea-Bissau completed the victory in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló finished a counter-attack after receiving a through ball from Tamble Monteiro to make it 3-0. Monteiro provided the assist; he did not score the goal.

The defeat leaves Nigeria on three points after two matches. Guinea-Bissau now have six points, while Madagascar and Tanzania have one point each after their 1-1 draw on Tuesday.

The Group L situation is particularly important because Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as one of the co-hosts. CAF confirmed before the qualifiers that only the highest-ranked team among Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar will take the remaining qualification place from the group.

Nigeria will now turn their attention to an international friendly against Russia in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6. The Super Eagles are then scheduled to resume their AFCON qualifying campaign in November, with Nigeria set to host Tanzania on November 11 before travelling to Tanzania on November 15.
