Borussia Dortmund forward Karim Adeyemi has opened up about why he decided to play for Germany instead of Nigeria on the international stage.
Adeyemi, who was born in Munich to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, had the option of representing either Nigeria or Germany, but he ultimately committed to the European nation.
Although he maintains strong ties to his Nigerian heritage, his decision has continued to spark debate among fans in Nigeria, as well as within his own family, particularly with his father.
In an interview with Oma Sports, the 23-year-old admitted, “It’s a tough one. My dad asks me this a lot. But I received a call from the German Football Association early, had a good feeling, and I went with it. That’s really all there is to it.”
Adeyemi, who gained recognition during his time at Red Bull Salzburg before joining Dortmund, made his senior debut for Germany in 2021 and has since been seen as a bright prospect in their national setup.
Despite his commitment to Germany, Adeyemi frequently expresses pride in his Nigerian roots. After a Champions League clash against Chelsea in 2023, he playfully attributed his speed to Nigerian cuisine, specifically a traditional dish called fufu.
While Nigeria may have missed out on Adeyemi, the Nigerian Football Federation has successfully secured other dual-national players like Ademola Lookman, Joe Aribo, and Calvin Bassey, showing their growing ability to attract talent from the diaspora.
