White Tigers complete Lagos Island hat-trick at Spires 5-Aside Championship

The Lagos Island divisional championship of the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament lived up to expectations, delivering thrilling matches, remarkable individual performances, and a fitting celebration of grassroots football at the Ikoyi Recreational Park.

Defending champions White Tigers FC once again demonstrated their superiority, securing a third consecutive divisional title after a commanding 5-2 victory over Greater Tomorrow FC in an entertaining final.

The Emmanuel Olom-led side showcased attacking brilliance and composure throughout the contest, underlining why they remain one of the most formidable teams in the competition.

Their triumph further cemented their status as a dominant force in Lagos Island street football.

Earlier, Alphas Football Club claimed third place after edging Dolphin FC 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a dramatic 3-3 draw in regulation time.

The encounter was one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, with both sides producing an end-to-end spectacle before Alphas held their nerve from the spot.

Speaking after the tournament, the initiator of the competition, Dr. Bankole Allibay, expressed satisfaction with the quality of football on display and reiterated his vision of transforming the Spires 5-Aside into a leading football brand across Africa.

According to him, the competition has continued to redefine five-a-side football in the West African sub-region, with plans already in motion to make it one of the continent's most commercially viable grassroots tournaments.

Beyond football, Allibay highlighted the importance of the Sports Meet-Tech initiative, a programme designed to equip players with valuable life and career skills beyond the game.

The champions, White Tigers FC, received N500,000 as prize money, while runners-up Greater Tomorrow FC earned N300,000. Third-placed Alphas FC were rewarded with N100,000 for their efforts.

Individual excellence was also recognised as White Tigers forward Ajo Azeez emerged as the tournament's top scorer. His six goals in three matches earned him the Golden Boot award and a cash prize of N50,000.

With their impressive performances, White Tigers FC, Greater Tomorrow FC, and Alphas FC have all secured qualification for the Lagos State Championship scheduled for November 2026.

Following successful divisional tournaments in Ikorodu, Epe, and Lagos Island, attention now shifts to Ikeja and Badagry, where the next phase of the Spires 5-Aside journey will continue in the coming weeks.

The successful conclusion of the Lagos Island qualifiers highlights the growing standard and competitive nature of the tournament. As the qualified teams prepare for the grand finale in November, the focus remains on discovering and nurturing exceptional talent across Lagos State.
