West Ham United have dismissed head coach Nuno Espirito Santo following a disappointing start to their Championship campaign, with the club's ambitions of securing an immediate return to the Premier League suffering a setback.
The 52-year-old Portuguese manager leaves after taking charge in September 2025. He was unable to prevent the Hammers from being relegated from the Premier League last season and has now paid the price for their inconsistent performances in the second tier.
West Ham were widely expected to challenge for automatic promotion but currently occupy eighth position in the Championship standings, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough. Their recent form has raised concerns, with just two victories in their last six matches.
Consecutive home defeats against Southampton and West Bromwich Albion proved particularly damaging. The Hammers lost 3-2 to Southampton before suffering a 3-1 defeat against West Brom on Saturday, results that saw them fall from second place in the table.
In an official statement, West Ham confirmed that the decision followed an extensive assessment of the team's performances and their progress towards the club's objectives.
The club also announced the departures of assistant head coach Rui Pedro Silva and goalkeeper coach Rui Barbosa, bringing an end to their respective spells at the London Stadium.
Former West Ham captain Mark Noble will oversee the team alongside Steve Potts and Gerard Prenderville on an interim basis. The trio will prepare the squad for Wednesday's Championship meeting with Cardiff City while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
The latest managerial change represents another turbulent period for West Ham since David Moyes departed in May 2024. Julen Lopetegui was appointed as his successor but lasted only six months before Graham Potter took over.
Potter's tenure also ended after eight months, with the club struggling near the relegation zone. Nuno was subsequently appointed in September 2025, but he could not prevent West Ham from dropping out of the Premier League after finishing the season two points behind Tottenham.
Despite their difficult opening to the Championship campaign, West Ham briefly appeared to have found their rhythm in September. Four consecutive league victories, including an impressive 6-0 triumph over Wrexham, propelled them to the top of the standings.
However, that promising run was followed by inconsistent results, including draws against Millwall and Queens Park Rangers. Although victories over Lincoln City and Swansea City offered some encouragement, the recent defeats against Southampton and West Brom ultimately proved decisive.
West Ham now face another managerial rebuilding process as they attempt to revive their promotion campaign and return to the Premier League.
