Werder Bremen close to signing Hamburg’s German-Nigerian right-back

Posted : 15 April 2025

Werder Bremen is reportedly in advanced negotiations to secure Hamburg's highly-rated right-back, Joshua Joel, who is eligible to play for Nigeria. At just 16 years old, Joel, a dual-national, has caught the eye of Werder Bremen, which has offered him a four-year contract. If the deal is finalized, he will begin his professional journey with the German club.

The transfer talks come after Werder Bremen signed Germany youth international Karim Coulibaly from Hamburg in the previous summer, and now the club is targeting another young talent from Hamburg's youth system. Joel, who joined Hamburg in 2021, has made two appearances for their U17 team in the DFB Youth League.

Despite his promising potential, Joel has not been called up to Hamburg's U17 squad since November 2024, raising questions about his future with the club. This absence from the youth team has fueled speculation about his departure.

One important factor in Joel’s potential move is his eligibility to play for Nigeria's youth teams. Since he has not represented Germany at any youth level, there are no complications in switching his national affiliation. This makes him available for immediate selection by Nigeria’s youth teams without needing to complete additional paperwork.

In addition to the interest in Joel, there are also rumors surrounding Werder Bremen's forward Justin Njinmah. The Nigerian forward is reportedly being watched by the Nigeria Football Federation and may leave Werder Bremen at the end of the season. Serie A club AS Roma is among the teams reportedly interested in Njinmah’s services.

During an interview with Transfermarkt, Njinmah revealed that moving abroad is a possibility for him this summer. His comments have added fuel to the speculation about his potential departure from Werder Bremen.

As both Joel and Njinmah's futures appear uncertain, Werder Bremen is looking to strengthen its squad with promising talents while also potentially losing players to other clubs in the near future. The coming months will be crucial in determining the next steps for these young players.
