2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 9 Review: Warri Wolves Secure Stunning Victory in Aba

Posted : 20 October 2025

Warri Wolves earned a morale-boosting 2-1 away victory over nine-time champions Enyimba FC in Aba, signaling their resurgence in the 2025/2026 NPFL season.

Warri Wolves bounced back in style, securing a morale-boosting 2-1 away victory over nine-time champions Enyimba FC in their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 9 encounter at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.

The Seasiders, who had endured a recent dip in form, displayed immense character and determination as they stunned the People’s Elephant in front of their home fans.

The thrilling encounter saw Warri Wolves take control early, capitalizing on quick transitions and tactical discipline to outplay the hosts.

Head Coach Johnny Austin was full of praise for his players’ spirited performance and fighting mentality, describing the win as a “statement of intent” from a team eager to remain competitive in the top flight.

In an emotional post-match reaction, Austin dedicated the historic victory to the sports-loving Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and the Delta State Sports Commission Chairman and Commissioner for Sports, whose unwavering support and recent logistical backing have greatly inspired the team.

“This victory is for Governor Oborevwori and the Honourable Sports Commissioner. Their continuous support has been a major motivation for the boys, and today, we showed that their investment is not in vain,” Austin said.

The coach further assured that the team would build on the momentum gained from the Aba triumph as they continue their 2025/2026 NPFL campaign.

The famous win in Aba sends a strong message to the rest of the league that Warri Wolves are back in form and ready to challenge any opposition, home or away.

However, Enyimba FC’s assistant coach, Ndubuisi Nduka, described the team’s 1-2 home defeat to newly promoted Warri Wolves as “a very bitter pill to swallow” and “like a thunderbolt.”

The loss marked a disappointing turnaround for Enyimba, who had been on a strong run in the first seven weeks of the league. Coach Nduka admitted that the team had prepared well but could not execute their plans effectively.

“This is a very bitter pill—very difficult. I don’t know how to explain it. Thinking back to our performance from week one through week seven, everything has started going into tatters since week eight,” Nduka lamented.

“After our loss in Owerri to Khun Khalifat, the boys promised to make things right. We prepared well, gave them enough rest, and did everything necessary—but look at the result today. Football can be very funny sometimes. We’ve played tougher matches here and still came out strong. Today, it just didn’t click.”

Despite the setback, Nduka expressed optimism about the team’s ability to recover.

“We’re not going to give up. From the next match, we’ll talk to ourselves, identify where we went wrong, and find solutions. It’s not something emotions will fix—we must face the reality of the situation. I believe we’ll sort it out, and the improvement will start showing from our next game,” he added.

The Elephants squandered several scoring opportunities during the match, failing to convert their chances into goals. The loss is a significant blow to Enyimba’s campaign, but the team remains focused on bouncing back stronger.
