Warri Wolves, Sapele Lions set up Delta FA Cup final showdown

Posted : 23 April 2026

Defending champions Warri Wolves delivered a composed and clinical performance to book their place in the final of the 2026 Delta FA Cup, overcoming spirited underdogs Tellectual FC 3–1 in a semi-final clash that highlighted the gulf in experience between both sides.

Despite their ongoing league struggles, the Seasiders showed their pedigree early on, asserting control from kickoff and taking the lead in the 10th minute through Emmanuel Arigboha. That early breakthrough settled nerves, allowing Warri Wolves to dictate tempo and pin their opponents back.

The game was effectively decided before halftime, thanks to a quickfire brace from in-form forward Igbunu Evwierhurhoma. His strikes in the 40th and 45th minutes capped a dominant first-half display, giving the holders a comfortable three-goal cushion heading into the break.

Tellectual FC, to their credit, emerged for the second half with renewed determination, pressing higher and attempting to stretch the Wolves’ backline.

However, their efforts were repeatedly frustrated by a well-organized defensive unit that absorbed pressure with discipline.

The amateurs eventually found a breakthrough in the 81st minute when Wilson Madu rose highest to nod home a cross, sparking brief hope of a comeback, but Warri Wolves remained composed, managing the closing stages professionally to see out the contest and secure their place in yet another final.

In the earlier semi-final, DE Sapele Lions demonstrated resilience and composure under pressure to edge Morak FC 6–5 on penalties after a dramatic 1–1 draw at the Kwale Township Stadium.

Sapele Lions appeared to be cruising to victory when Jonathan Ebule broke the deadlock in the 60th minute.

However, Morak FC struck late in stoppage time, benefiting from a deflected cross by Precious Sunday to force the game into penalties and keep their dream alive.

The ensuing shootout proved tense and unforgiving, with both sides converting nine spot-kicks before Sapele Lions eventually prevailed 6–5, sealing a second consecutive appearance in the final.

All eyes now turn to the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro, where Warri Wolves will face DE Sapele Lions in what promises to be a thrilling finale on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 12 noon, with a host of former Super Eagles stars expected to add glamour to the occasion.

For Warri Wolves, it is another opportunity to reinforce their dominance in Delta football, while Sapele Lions will be eager to go one step further after falling short in last year’s final.

The stage is now set for a high-stakes rematch between the province's heavyweights. Both teams have shown the grit necessary to reach this point, ensuring that the final in Ozoro will be a fitting climax to the tournament.
