Warri Wolves made a dream return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) by recording the biggest away win of Matchday 1, defeating Katsina United 1-0 at the Mohammadu Dikko Stadium.
The newly promoted Seasiders, back in the NPFL after years outside the top flight, earned maximum points thanks to a decisive 76th-minute strike from forward Igbunu Evwierhurhoma. His clinical finish sealed an important victory for the Delta State side, who showed resilience and determination throughout the encounter.
The match was tightly contested, with Katsina United pressing for an opener, but Warri Wolves’ defensive discipline and quick transitions proved crucial. The breakthrough came in the second half, and the visitors held firm to secure a historic win on the road.
Reacting to the result, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, praised the players and technical crew for their determination. He attributed the success to the unwavering support of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, noting the administration’s continued investment in sports development.
“This victory is a testament to the governor’s commitment to sports and the determination of our boys. Warri Wolves are back in the topflight to compete, and this result shows they mean business,” Oborevwori stated.
The win marks a major milestone in Warri Wolves’ return and sets a positive tone for the campaign ahead. The Seasiders will now prepare for their first home fixture of the season against Enugu Rangers on August 31 at the Southern Delta University Stadium, Ozoro, where fans are expected to turn out in large numbers to support their team.
