Defending champions Remo Stars’ turbulent 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign took another damaging turn as they slipped to a 1–0 defeat against Warri Wolves in Ozoro, a result that further exposed their growing relegation fears.
At the Southern University Stadium, the Sky Blue Stars once again struggled to impose themselves, allowing the league returnees to claim one of the most significant results of Match Day 23.
The loss leaves Daniel Ogunmodede’s side stranded in 17th place on the NPFL table, firmly entrenched in the relegation zone with just 26 points from 23 matches.
For a club that lifted the title barely a season ago, the contrast could not be starker.
Eight wins, two draws, and a worrying 13 defeats now define Remo Stars’ title defence, with only one victory recorded in their last five outings, a run that underlines their alarming loss of momentum.
Warri Wolves, by contrast, continue to exceed expectations in their return to the top flight. The Seasiders showed composure and tactical discipline, capitalising on their moment just seven minutes into the second half.
Chisom Orji struck in the 52nd minute, a goal that proved decisive and sent the home fans into celebration.
That solitary strike not only secured maximum points but also lifted Warri Wolves to ninth position on 33 points, keeping them firmly in the conversation for a potential late push up the table.
Speaking after the match, Orji, who returned recently from injury, expressed confidence in the team’s ambition, boldly setting his sights on a continental ticket.
The lanky forward, formerly of Sporting Lagos, Akwa United, and Portugal’s Famalicão, stressed that consistency and hard work would be key.
“It was a wonderful game, and I’m happy with my performance,” Orji said.
“I had always wanted to score against Remo Stars, and I’m glad it finally happened.”
The forward also revealed the personal significance of the goal, admitting it fulfilled a long-held dream from his academy days.
However, he was quick to shift attention to the road ahead, insisting improvement and belief must continue if Warri Wolves are to sustain their upward climb.
“This goal makes me feel good, but I know I must keep improving daily,” he added.
“I’ve just returned from injury after two to three months out, so I want to keep giving my best. By God’s grace, I believe we can achieve a continental spot.”
For Remo Stars, however, the warning signs are unmistakable. With the season entering a decisive phase, the champions now face mounting pressure to rediscover their identity quickly or risk completing one of the most dramatic title-defence collapses in NPFL history.
