WAFU-B WCL: Edo Queens Fire Seven Past Nigerien Champions, Eye Continental Return

Edo Queens made a powerful statement in their quest for another appearance at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals, thrashing AS Garde Nationale of Niger 7-0 in their opening Group B fixture of the 2026 WAFU-B qualifiers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Nigerian champions wasted little time asserting their dominance, with Chioma Moses opening the scoring in the fifth minute before converting from the penalty spot three minutes into first-half stoppage time to give Edo Queens a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the break.

The Benin-based side returned from the interval with even greater intensity, scoring five more goals to complete a commanding victory.

Atume Doosuur extended the lead two minutes into the second half before completing her brace in the 56th minute.

Aminat Folorunsho added Edo Queens’ fifth goal in the 62nd minute, while Moses completed her hat-trick 14 minutes later.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi then put the finishing touch on an outstanding team performance by scoring in the third minute of stoppage time.

Moses was subsequently named Woman of the Match after her three-goal contribution.

The emphatic victory immediately placed Edo Queens at the summit of Group B on goal difference, with three points, ahead of Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies, who opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire.

Group B was widely regarded as the more competitive of the two groups following the draw, particularly because only one team will secure WAFU-B’s ticket to the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

ASEC Mimosas provide a significant test for Edo Queens, having represented Côte d’Ivoire at last year’s CAF Women’s Champions League and progressed all the way to the continental final.

Edo Queens will face ASEC Mimosas in their second Group B encounter on Thursday, Aug. 27, at 3 p.m., while Ampem Darkoa will take on AS Garde Nationale at 6 p.m.

The Nigerian champions will conclude their group campaign on Sunday, Aug. 30, against Ampem Darkoa at 4 p.m., in a fixture that could determine the team’s progression to the knockout stage.

The other Group B match that day will see AS Garde Nationale face ASEC Mimosas, also at 4 p.m.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for Sept. 2, with the final and third-place match set for Sept. 5.

The eventual tournament winner will represent the WAFU-B zone at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League finals.

Edo Queens will draw confidence from their previous continental campaign, having won the WAFU-B qualifiers on their debut in 2024 before finishing fourth at the CAF Women’s Champions League that year.

After their seven-goal opening statement, the Nigerian champions will now turn their attention to ASEC Mimosas, knowing that another positive result could put them firmly in control of their continental ambitions.
