WAFU B U17: Golden Eaglets Drawn in Group B With Niger, Côte d’Ivoire

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been drawn in Group B of the 2026 WAFU B U17 Championship, which will be hosted by Burkina Faso in October. The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions will face Niger Republic and Côte d’Ivoire in the group stage.

The regional tournament is scheduled to run from October 10 to 23, with the participating nations competing for the WAFU B title and a chance to strengthen their standing in the region. The draw places Nigeria in a three-team group, meaning every fixture could carry significant weight in the race for the knockout stages.

Group A features hosts Burkina Faso alongside Ghana, Togo and Benin. The arrangement sets up a competitive tournament, with several West African nations bringing strong youth football traditions to the competition.

The Golden Eaglets have already begun preparations for the championship. Head coach Uwejamomere Eboboritse invited 62 players to camp in Abuja in August as the technical team began screening and training ahead of the tournament. The provisional group consisted of five goalkeepers, 18 defenders, 20 midfielders and 19 forwards.

Nigeria’s pedigree gives the team additional pressure heading into the competition. The Golden Eaglets have won the FIFA U-17 World Cup five times, the joint-most titles by any nation in the history of the competition.

However, the immediate objective will be to negotiate a difficult group against two familiar West African opponents. Niger have also developed a strong youth football programme, while Côte d’Ivoire remain one of the region’s established football nations.

The Golden Eaglets will need to finish strongly in their group to keep their title ambitions alive. Their performances in Burkina Faso will also provide another opportunity for the coaching staff to assess players who could form the core of Nigeria’s next generation of international stars.

The championship will be an important test for Eboboritse and his technical crew. With preparations already underway, the focus will now shift toward building a balanced squad capable of competing against Niger and Côte d’Ivoire and progressing deep into the tournament.
