WAFU B U-20 Tourney: Burkina Faso Complete Flying Eagles Double with Emphatic Final Win

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles’ defence of the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship ended on a disappointing note on Saturday as Burkina Faso produced a commanding 4-1 victory in the final at Stade Charles Konan Banny in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Young Stallions, who had already defeated Nigeria in the group stage, completed a tournament double over the defending champions with a ruthless performance that was effectively decided in the opening 45 minutes.

Burkina Faso seized the initiative from the outset, putting the Nigerian defence under intense pressure with quick transitions, direct running and purposeful attacks.

Their persistence soon paid off as three goals in the first half left the Flying Eagles facing a daunting 3-0 deficit at the break.

Nigeria struggled to cope with Burkina Faso’s attacking movement, while lapses at the back repeatedly allowed the Young Stallions to penetrate dangerous areas. The early setback forced Abdu Maikaba’s side into a difficult chase for the remainder of the contest.

The Flying Eagles returned from the interval with greater urgency and briefly gave themselves hope when Muiz Adeleke converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

The goal sparked a stronger Nigerian response, with the Flying Eagles pushing forward and attempting to regain control of the contest. However, Burkina Faso remained organised, protecting their advantage with a compact defensive shape while continuing to threaten on the counter.

Nigeria’s hopes of staging a remarkable comeback were finally extinguished when the Young Stallions added a fourth goal late in the encounter to complete a convincing victory.

The triumph capped a highly impressive campaign for Burkina Faso, who not only secured the regional title but also demonstrated their superiority over Nigeria in both meetings at the championship.

With the victory, the Young Stallions have earned the right to represent the WAFU B zone alongside hosts Ghana at next year’s Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, while the Flying Eagles will be left to reflect on a final-day collapse that denied them another regional crown.
