WAFU-B CAFWCLQ: Edo Queens roar into final with 5-1 demolition of USFA

Edo Queens FC delivered a statement performance on Wednesday, dismantling Burkina Faso’s USFA FC 5-1 in the semi-final of the WAFU-B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament in Ouagadougou.

The reigning Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) champions produced a clinical attacking display at the Stade 4 Août, putting their hosts under relentless pressure and effectively settling the contest before the final stages.

Atume Doosuur set the tone for the Nigerian champions in the 17th minute, giving Edo Queens an early advantage and providing the platform for another commanding performance.

The Benin-based side then turned the pressure into a two-goal burst just before halftime. Chioma Moses doubled the advantage in the 43rd minute before Valentina Uroko struck two minutes later to send Edo Queens into the interval with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Rather than ease off after the restart, Edo Queens continued their assault.

Doshima Tarnum extended the lead in the 46th minute, capitalising from a corner kick to further expose the defensive weaknesses of the Burkinabe side.

Aminat Folorunsho completed Edo Queens’ five-star display in the 62nd minute, taking the scoreline beyond USFA’s reach and underlining the Nigerian champions’ superiority.

USFA managed to score a consolation goal in the 91st minute, but it did little to alter the outcome as Edo Queens comfortably secured their place in the final.

The emphatic victory also represents a strong response from Edo Queens following their 2-1 defeat to Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC in their final Group B encounter on Sunday.

Before that setback, Edo Queens had been in devastating form, opening their campaign with a 7-0 demolition of AS Garde Nationale of Niger Republic before following it up with a 3-1 victory over ASEC Mimosas of Côte d’Ivoire.

With their place in the final now secured, Edo Queens could face Ampem Darkoa Ladies once again in what promises to be a keenly contested title showdown.

For the Nigerian champions, however, Wednesday’s five-goal outburst will provide renewed confidence as they seek to reclaim their place at the summit of WAFU-B women’s football and secure qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
