Swansea City have emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the 2026-27 English Championship season under Portuguese manager Vitor Matos. The Swans sit at the top of the table after 10 matches, having won seven games. Their strong start marks a major turnaround from the relegation concerns that surrounded the club when Matos took charge in November 2025.
Despite having managed only 12 senior matches before arriving in Wales, Matos brought extensive coaching experience to the role. The 38-year-old spent five years working under former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp as an elite development coach. He later joined Red Bull Salzburg as assistant to Pep Lijnders before taking charge of Portuguese side Maritimo.
Matos acknowledged that his time at Liverpool shaped his approach to pressing, counter-pressing and building team intensity. However, he stressed that his philosophy also reflects lessons from his coaching experiences in Portugal and China.
He made restoring confidence a priority after replacing Alan Sheehan. Matos wanted his players to become more aggressive without the ball and develop a stronger connection with one another. He also settled on a 4-3-3 formation to give the squad greater tactical consistency.
The system encourages Swansea to press opponents high up the pitch and recover possession quickly after losing the ball. Matos believes these actions can improve the team's confidence while creating opportunities to attack before opponents reorganize.
His tactical approach also draws heavily on positional play, which he developed during his time working with FC Porto's youth teams. Swansea use coordinated movements and short passing combinations to create numerical advantages around the ball. These overloads help the team escape pressure and open spaces in opposing defences.
Matos has also adapted ideas from his time in China. Rather than spreading players across the pitch immediately, he sometimes brings them closer together to create more passing options. This approach helps Swansea deal with opponents who use aggressive man-to-man marking.
The team's full-backs also play important tactical roles. Their positioning and forward runs can force opposing wingers to make difficult decisions, leaving gaps for Swansea's defenders, midfielders or wide attackers to exploit.
Matos believes tactical principles must be adapted to the players available. He studies their strengths, personalities and individual needs before deciding how best to implement his preferred style. This approach allows players to gain confidence while helping the team develop a clear identity.
His leadership philosophy also reflects Klopp's influence. Matos praised the German coach's ability to support players, build relationships and create a strong team culture. He believes understanding players as individuals is essential to getting the best out of them.
Swansea's early-season form has placed Matos among the Championship's most closely watched managers. The club's performances have combined energetic pressing with possession-based football, offering supporters renewed optimism about the team's direction.
However, Matos remains focused on improving his squad rather than making premature predictions about the final standings. His immediate objective is to maintain consistency, strengthen the team's tactical understanding and prepare Swansea for the challenges ahead.
