Van Dijk Urges Ngumoha to Stay Grounded After Teenager’s Historic Winner for Liverpool

Posted : 26 August 2025

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has cautioned 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha to remain humble and focused after the youngster’s historic debut goal sealed a thrilling 3-2 win against Newcastle United on Monday night.

Ngumoha, introduced as a late substitute, became Liverpool’s youngest-ever goalscorer when he netted in the 100th minute to snatch victory at St. James’ Park. His strike capped off a remarkable debut in a match that saw the Premier League champions nearly surrender a two-goal advantage.

Liverpool had gone ahead through Ryan Gravenberch before new signing Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead shortly after Anthony Gordon was dismissed for a reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk. Despite being down to 10 men, Newcastle roared back with goals from Bruno Guimaraes and William Osula, setting the stage for Ngumoha’s decisive intervention deep into stoppage time.

Speaking after the match, Van Dijk praised the teenager but reminded him of the need to remain disciplined:

“It’s a dream debut for him. I’m very happy for Rio, but I told him this is only the beginning. He must keep working hard, stay humble, and enjoy the moment — but tomorrow it’s back to training and back to business.”

The Dutch defender admitted Liverpool struggled defensively, particularly from set pieces, but emphasized the importance of the three points. He also acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding Newcastle striker Alexander Isak’s future intensified the already hostile atmosphere inside the stadium.

For Newcastle, the loss leaves them with just a single point from their first two matches, while questions over Isak’s future loom large ahead of the transfer deadline. Manager Eddie Howe, however, praised his side’s resilience and character despite the defeat, insisting they had shown enough fight to deserve more from the contest.
