Virgil van Dijk has delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool’s campaign, describing the season as “unacceptable” after their latest defeat to Manchester United. The Liverpool captain said the team must take responsibility for their struggles and ensure such a disappointing title defence is not repeated.
The Dutch defender stressed that significant improvements are needed behind the scenes, urging the squad to reflect on a season that has fallen well short of expectations. He made it clear that excuses are not acceptable, insisting the club must respond with stronger standards moving forward.
Liverpool’s 3-2 loss at Old Trafford marked their 18th defeat in all competitions and their 11th league loss of the season. Despite a brief run of improved results, their form has been inconsistent, leaving them fourth in the table and still needing points to secure Champions League qualification.
Van Dijk highlighted the importance of finishing strongly, both for sporting and financial reasons, while also emphasising the club’s need to compete regularly at the highest level in Europe. He acknowledged the disappointment among supporters and within the squad, but insisted that accountability must come from within the group.
The 34-year-old also defended Liverpool’s training schedule amid external criticism, stating that players are professionals who manage their own recovery and time off responsibly. He compared approaches across top clubs, suggesting balance is key to maintaining performance levels.
Looking ahead, Van Dijk called for reflection and long-term improvement, saying the current season cannot be repeated. With a few matches remaining, he urged the team to restore pride and finish the campaign strongly before major changes are addressed in the summer.
