Vinicius Apologises After Clasico Incident as Real and Barca Face Challenges

Posted : 31 October 2025

Real Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in last weekend’s Clasico highlighted both teams’ struggles, from Vinicius Jr.’s substitution controversy to Barcelona’s inconsistent form.

Three days after the match, Vinicius Jr. issued a public apology for his reaction to being replaced in the 72nd minute by Rodrygo. The Brazilian star had confronted coach Xabi Alonso and walked off toward the tunnel in frustration.

“Today I want to apologise to all Madrid fans for my reaction to being substituted in the Clasico. I have also apologised to my teammates, club, and president,” the 25-year-old stated, without mentioning Alonso by name.

The incident coincides with ongoing contract negotiations, though Vinicius is currently signed through 2027. He has scored five LaLiga goals this season, but Kylian Mbappé has emerged as Madrid’s primary scorer, netting 16 goals in 13 appearances.

Real fans hope that Vinicius and Alonso can repair their working relationship ahead of Saturday’s home clash with relegation-threatened Valencia. Madrid then travel to face Liverpool in the Champions League.

Barcelona, meanwhile, must respond quickly after a second loss in three domestic games, following their Champions League defeat to PSG. The Catalans are grappling with a growing injury crisis, with Pedri sidelined for weeks with a thigh tear. Goalkeepers Joan García and Marc-André ter Stegen, along with Gavi and Raphinha, are also unavailable, though Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo have returned to training.

Elsewhere in LaLiga this weekend, Villarreal, in third place, host Rayo Vallecano, while Atletico Madrid, unbeaten since opening weekend, face Sevilla. Real Sociedad, hovering just above the relegation zone, welcome Athletic Bilbao for the Basque derby in San Sebastian.
