Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany chose to highlight his team’s development rather than dwell on disappointment after their Champions League semifinal exit to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday.
A narrow 1-1 draw in Munich saw Bayern eliminated 6-5 on aggregate, following PSG’s dramatic 5-4 victory in the first leg in Paris. The defending champions held firm under pressure to secure their place in the final, leaving Bayern without a chance of reaching a treble this season.
PSG made an early breakthrough in the second leg when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia combined quickly in midfield before setting up Ousmane Dembélé for a clinical finish inside three minutes. Despite Bayern’s efforts to respond, including a stoppage-time equaliser from Harry Kane, the German side could not overturn the deficit.
The result meant Bayern’s wait for a seventh Champions League title continues, although Kompany pointed out that the team had shown improvement compared to recent seasons. He noted that while defeat is always disappointing, both legs were tightly contested and decided by small margins.
The Bayern coach admitted his side needed to be more clinical in key moments but insisted he was encouraged by their overall performance and progress throughout the campaign. He also congratulated PSG, acknowledging their quality and efficiency in decisive situations.
Bayern players also expressed frustration over several refereeing decisions, including penalty appeals involving handball incidents. However, Kompany downplayed the impact of officiating on the outcome, suggesting that his team should have taken better advantage of their chances instead.
Despite dominating possession for long periods, Bayern were repeatedly threatened by PSG’s attacking pace and movement. Manuel Neuer was forced into several key saves as the French side looked dangerous on the counterattack.
Reflecting on the defeat, Kompany stressed that the experience should serve as motivation for future campaigns. While Bayern fell short of their European ambitions this season, he believes the squad is moving in the right direction and capable of returning stronger.
