Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany is expected to spend several weeks away from the touchline after collapsing during a training session on Friday while recovering from a viral infection. The 40-year-old Belgian remains in hospital in stable condition as doctors continue examinations to establish the cause of the incident.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed on Saturday that Kompany would remain under medical supervision until the necessary tests were completed. He stressed that the club would not set a return date before doctors had established the nature of the problem and assessed his recovery needs.
Eberl said the club would give Kompany as much time as necessary to recover fully, making it clear that his absence was likely to last weeks rather than days. He added that the manager’s health remained the club’s priority.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks will take charge of Bayern for Sunday’s Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Speaking to reporters in Kompany’s absence, Danks revealed that he had contacted the manager after the incident but deliberately avoided discussing football, focusing instead on his well-being.
Danks said the coaching staff would work together to maintain the team’s preparations and ensure the club’s operations continued during Kompany’s absence. Bayern also decided to proceed with the Freiburg fixture, with Eberl suggesting that a strong performance and positive result would be a welcome boost for their recovering manager.
Kompany had been battling a virus in the days leading up to his collapse. The illness had already disrupted his preparations for Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal, forcing him to miss some training activities and pre-match media duties. However, he returned to the dugout for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw against the English side.
After the Arsenal match, Kompany acknowledged that he had pushed himself too hard while ill, ignoring the warning signs from his body until he could no longer continue as normal.
Bayern’s reserve-team match was postponed following Friday’s incident, while the senior side continued preparations for its Bundesliga commitment. Germany captain Joshua Kimmich will also be unavailable for the Freiburg encounter as he remains on bereavement leave.
The German champions enter the match at the top of the Bundesliga standings, with Freiburg among the teams chasing them. Bayern are scheduled to face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League on November 3, although Kompany’s availability for that fixture remains uncertain.
For now, Bayern’s coaching staff will oversee the team while the club awaits further medical updates. Eberl reiterated that Kompany would only return when he was fully fit, with no pressure placed on him to resume his duties prematurely.
