Vincent Kompany Named Germany’s Coach of the Year After Bayern Success

Vincent Kompany has gone from a surprise appointment at Bayern Munich to one of the club’s most successful and well-liked coaches, after guiding the Bavarians to major domestic honours and being named Germany’s Coach of the Year by Kicker.

The Belgian arrived in Munich in 2024 following Burnley’s relegation from the Premier League, having previously led the English club to the Championship title with 101 points. Despite that difficult season in the top flight, Bayern took a chance on their former defender after several other managerial options failed to materialise.

Kompany quickly justified the decision. Bayern won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in the 2025/26 campaign, while also reaching the Champions League semi-finals before being eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain. His side also produced a record-breaking attacking season, scoring 122 goals in the Bundesliga.

Beyond his results, Kompany has earned praise for his leadership and relationship with his players. His ability to handle the expectations surrounding Bayern while maintaining a calm and approachable public image has helped him win support from both inside and outside the club. Bayern's own assessment of his coaching highlights his stability, empathy and ability to connect with players and staff.

Now 40, Kompany is entering another season with Bayern carrying considerably greater expectations. He has made it clear that winning the Champions League is among the club's principal objectives after last season's semi-final disappointment.

The German champions have already started the new campaign positively, defeating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the German Super Cup. Bayern will begin their Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart on Friday as Kompany looks to add more silverware to his growing collection.
