Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior praised Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal for openly condemning anti-Muslim chants during Spain’s friendly against Egypt last week. Speaking on Monday, Vinícius emphasized the importance of players uniting in the fight against discrimination and supporting those who face racist abuse.
Vinícius, who has often been the target of racist taunts while playing in Europe, acknowledged the difficulty of addressing such issues. “Hopefully we can continue with this fight,” he said. “It’s important that Lamine speaks about it. We are famous, we have money, we can balance these things better, but the poor people and the Blacks who are everywhere surely struggle more than we do.”
The Brazilian also reflected on his own experiences, including a recent incident in Lisbon where he accused Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni of calling him a monkey after scoring in a Champions League match. He stressed that racism exists everywhere but highlighted the role high-profile players can play in combating it.
Off the pitch, Vinícius addressed his future at Madrid, confirming he plans to agree on a contract extension at the right time. Despite a turbulent season under former coach Xabi Alonso, including a three-month scoring drought, Vinícius has returned to form, scoring four goals in two matches against Manchester City and Atlético Madrid.
The forward has been pivotal in recent Champions League successes and continues to be a key figure for Real Madrid ahead of their upcoming quarterfinal against Bayern Munich.
