Villarreal Aims to Upset LaLiga Leaders Barcelona with New Signing Ayoze Perez in Form

Villarreal is set to host LaLiga leaders Barcelona this Sunday, aiming to build on their promising start to the season despite losing several key players during the summer transfer window. New signing Ayoze Perez has quickly made an impact since joining from Real Betis in August, helping Villarreal remain unbeaten and tied on 11 points with champions Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. Only Barcelona, with a perfect record of five wins, sits above them in the standings.

 

Ayoze Perez, who was part of Spain's Euro 2024-winning squad, has stepped up following the departure of striker Alexander Sorloth to Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old has already shown his worth, scoring crucial goals including a late winner against Real Mallorca, an equalizer against Valencia, and a decisive goal against Sevilla. These performances have placed him just one goal shy of Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski, the current top scorer.

 

Expressing his satisfaction with his new role, Perez mentioned that he is still adapting to the team and coach's expectations. He feels appreciated at Villarreal, contrasting his experience at his previous club. "Villarreal came for me strongly, valuing me as a footballer," he stated, emphasizing his happiness with the move and the strong start to the season.

 

Villarreal has also strengthened its squad through other astute signings, with players like Diego Conde, Sergi Cardona, and Logan Costa making solid contributions. With Barcelona also busy in the Champions League against Monaco, Villarreal hopes to capitalize on any fatigue from their opponents. Ayoze will be supported by playmaker Alex Baena and former Barcelona winger Ilias Akhomach, who expressed his excitement about facing his old club. Meanwhile, Barcelona will miss the suspended Ferran Torres and several injured stars, adding further intrigue to the upcoming clash.
