Victor Boniface Defies Medical Odds with Surprise Return to Werder Bremen Training After Surgery

Posted : 03 April 2026

Werder Bremen officials have expressed their astonishment at the rapid recovery of Victor Boniface. The Nigerian international made a surprising return to the training ground this week. He had previously undergone surgery in January to repair significant cartilage damage in his right knee. Early medical projections suggested the 25-year-old would remain sidelined for the remainder of the 2025/2026 Bundesliga campaign.

The striker has spent the last three months undergoing intensive rehabilitation at his parent club, Bayer Leverkusen. He rejoined the Werder Bremen squad on Tuesday to begin the final phase of his comeback. Peter Niemeyer, the head of professional football at Bremen, confirmed that the player’s knee is now fully stable. Niemeyer noted that the surgical recovery has progressed much faster than the club’s medical staff had originally predicted.

Despite the positive news regarding his knee, Boniface faces a significant challenge regarding his match fitness. Reports from Bild suggest the forward has returned approximately 10 kilograms overweight following his lengthy layoff. Niemeyer addressed these concerns by stating that the club is working intensively to help him shed the extra weight. The club official emphasized that while they will provide full support, Boniface is primarily responsible for regaining his professional playing weight.

The Super Eagles star has already started individual drills on the grass and is expected to join partial team sessions soon. This comeback has drawn praise from fellow countryman Victor Osimhen, who celebrated the news on social media. Boniface himself shared his excitement online; he noted that the three-month journey has been a test of his patience and faith. He is now focused on helping Bremen during the final seven matches of the league season.

Werder Bremen currently sit 14th in the Bundesliga standings with 28 points from 27 matches. They are currently just four points clear of the relegation zone. Head coach Daniel Thioune has indicated that while Boniface will miss the upcoming clash against RB Leipzig, he could play a role in later fixtures. His presence in the squad is viewed as a vital asset for the club's battle to remain in the German top flight.
