Veteran Defender Thomas Meunier Joins Sunderland on Two-Year Deal

Sunderland have strengthened their squad with the signing of experienced Belgian defender Thomas Meunier, who has joined the Premier League club on a free transfer after leaving French side Lille. The 34-year-old has agreed to a two-year contract as he prepares for the next chapter of his career.

Meunier expressed his excitement after completing the move, describing it as an honour to join Sunderland. He said the opportunity to play in the Premier League had long been one of his ambitions, while the club's vision and determination to continue progressing convinced him to make the switch.

The veteran full-back also highlighted Sunderland's participation in the UEFA Europa League as a major factor behind his decision. He said competing in European football and testing himself against top-level opposition remained an important motivation at this stage of his career.

Meunier arrives with a wealth of experience after representing clubs across Belgium, France, Germany and Turkey. During his four-year spell with Paris Saint-Germain, he helped the club win three Ligue 1 titles before later featuring for Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor and Lille. He also brings extensive international experience, earning more than 80 caps for Belgium and recently featuring in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sunderland's Director of Football, Florent Ghisolfi, welcomed the signing, praising Meunier's leadership qualities, professionalism and winning mentality. He believes the defender's experience will strengthen the squad both on the pitch and in the dressing room as the club prepares for the challenges of domestic and European competition.

Ghisolfi added that Meunier's character and competitive mindset make him an ideal fit for Sunderland's long-term project, expressing confidence that the Belgian will make a valuable contribution during his time at the Stadium of Light.
