Lionel Messi’s hopes of guiding Inter Miami to a historic Concacaf Champions Cup title were dashed after the Vancouver Whitecaps claimed a 3-1 victory in Florida, sealing a dominant 5-1 aggregate win. The Canadian side will now face either Cruz Azul or Tigres UANL in the final, with both Mexican teams locked at 1-1 heading into their second leg. Vancouver, energized and clinical, stunned an Inter Miami side full of star power but lacking cohesion, scoring all three of their goals in the second half to reach their first regional final.
Despite trailing from the first leg, Miami began strongly with Jordi Alba scoring early after a slick move initiated by Messi and Suarez. However, the Whitecaps didn’t sit back. Instead, they kept pressing and were unlucky not to equalize before halftime, hitting the post and forcing Miami’s keeper into multiple saves. Their fast-paced, incisive play continued to expose Miami's sluggish defense and disjointed midfield throughout the match.
Vancouver's breakthrough came shortly after the interval. Sebastian Berhalter set up Brian White for the equalizer before Pedro Vite added another just minutes later with a deflected strike. Berhalter then sealed the result with a third, reacting quickest to a rebound to extend the lead and leave Inter Miami with no path back. Messi had a couple of late chances, but by then, the contest was beyond reach.
The night ended on a bittersweet note for Vancouver as Berhalter picked up a yellow card, ruling him out of the final. Inter Miami, meanwhile, must now shift their focus to the MLS Cup and the upcoming Club World Cup. Coach Javier Mascherano admitted the loss was painful, especially after making it this far, but conceded that Vancouver were the better team on the night.
