Rangers International FC will aim to strengthen their position in the top half of the Nigeria Premier Football League table when they welcome Bayelsa United to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Sunday. However, the buildup has been dominated by narratives off the pitch.
Amid swirling rumors about his job security and supposed friction within the technical setup, Rangers’ Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has moved quickly to shut down the noise, insisting that the atmosphere in camp remains harmonious and focused.
“We are one family here,” Ilechukwu asserted during his pre-match briefing in Enugu.
“My assistants and I work closely every day. People outside may say what they want, but inside, we are united and committed.”
The coach further highlighted his trust in Chief Coach Ekenederichukwu Eke, who often leads the side when Ilechukwu is away on Super Eagles duty.
“In my absence, he handles the team well. That is leadership—preparing others to step up,” he noted.
Despite recent speculation, the former Plateau United, MFM, and Heartland boss reaffirmed his commitment to Rangers, dismissing talk of an imminent exit.
“I have a contract here, and I’ve never left any club without completing my terms,” he said.
Since joining Rangers, Ilechukwu has tasted immediate success—winning the NPFL title in his first season with an impressive 71-point tally and guiding the club to the Federation Cup semi-finals.
Though last season was less consistent, ending 10th with 52 points, the coach remains focused on reclaiming top form.
One of his key weapons in that pursuit is midfielder Kenechukwu Agu, whom he described as the league’s best passer.
“Agu will start on Sunday,” Ilechukwu confirmed. “He’s intelligent, creative, and unpredictable—qualities every team needs.”
Agu, 26, has been crucial this season with two goals and one assist in eight matches and remains one of the club’s most reliable performers with over 100 NPFL appearances.
With the squad fully fit and preparations complete, Ilechukwu expects a stern test from visiting Bayelsa United, who sit 11th with 20 points from 15 games.
“Bayelsa United are very competitive. We will not take them lightly,” the coach warned.
Rangers, currently 8th on 22 points, hope a home victory at “The Cathedral” will provide the needed spark as the season approaches its midpoint.
Sunday’s matchup promises intensity, narrative, and tactical intrigue—everything expected from a tightly contested NPFL fixture.
