FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Uzoma Inspires as Falconets Overpower England 3-0

Nigeria’s Falconets produced a composed and clinical performance on Thursday to defeat England’s Young Lionesses 3-0 and advance to the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland.

The two-time World Cup silver medallists made an impressive start at Bielsko-Biała, taking the lead in the eighth minute through Tosin Rafiu after sustained early pressure.

Ramotalahi Kareem and Precious Oscar had earlier unsettled the English defence, with Nigeria showing attacking intent from the opening exchanges.

England gradually found their rhythm and threatened through Lily Dent, Princess Ademiluyi and Rachel Maltby, but goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma kept Nigeria ahead with a crucial penalty save.

Following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review in the 33rd minute, England were awarded a penalty, but Uzoma stood tall to deny Maltby from six yards and preserve Nigeria’s advantage.

The goalkeeper was particularly important in the first half, making six significant saves as Nigeria’s defence worked hard to contain the physical threat posed by Ademiluyi.

The Falconets survived the pressure to take a 1-0 lead into the interval.

Nigeria resumed the second half with renewed purpose and doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart.

Janet Akekoromowei found the net in the 47th minute with a clinical strike that placed the Young Lionesses under further pressure.

England responded by introducing Vivienne Lia for Lily Dent but struggled to break through Nigeria’s organised midfield and defence.

Falconets coach Moses Aduku subsequently made changes that strengthened Nigeria’s control of the contest.

Mary Mamudu replaced Kareem in the 61st minute and made her presence felt 12 minutes later, finishing from a Precious Oscar assist to put Nigeria 3-0 ahead.

With the game effectively under control, Aduku introduced Victory Lucky, Winner Onajite David and Folajomi Olabiyi as the Falconets maintained their intensity during the closing stages.

England brought on Chloe Hylton, Layla Drury, Eleanor Klinger and Jessie Gale in search of a way back into the game, but Nigeria remained disciplined.

Klinger and Drury attempted to create opportunities for England, although repeated offside calls and determined Nigerian defending frustrated the Young Lionesses.

The victory sends the Falconets into the quarter-finals, where they will face either hosts Poland or Colombia on Sunday.

The quarter-final is scheduled for the Władysław Król Municipal Stadium in Łódź, with kick-off fixed for 2 p.m. Nigeria time.

Aduku attributed the team’s performance to the motivation received ahead of the encounter.

“We are very happy with this victory. The girls had a very motivating conference call with the NFF Acting General Secretary on Wednesday night, and they promised to go all out today. I am happy they did that.

“We will go back to Łódź and aim for victory against either Poland or Colombia on Sunday,” he said.

NFF Acting General Secretary Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme also praised the Falconets for their performance.

“This win is a great feat by the Falconets. We are delighted at the dominant performance, and we will continue to encourage and motivate the girls until they go all the way to clinch the trophy,” he said.
