Uzbekistan Celebrates Historic World Cup Qualification with National Honors, Electric Cars

Posted : 10 June 2025

Uzbekistan marked a historic milestone by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in its history. The national football team celebrated the achievement during a special ceremony in Tashkent following their 3-0 victory over Qatar. The event took place in front of an enthusiastic crowd, and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev personally honored the players and coaching staff on the pitch.

As a gesture of appreciation, he presented them with electric vehicles manufactured by BYD and bestowed upon them the title of "Pride of Uzbekistan," a national distinction reserved for individuals who bring joy and prestige to the country.

This unprecedented recognition comes after years of persistent effort and previous heartbreaks. Uzbekistan has long pursued World Cup qualification since gaining independence in 1991 but fell short on seven occasions, including narrow misses for the 2006 and 2014 tournaments.

The recent expansion of the tournament to 48 teams created new opportunities, and Uzbekistan capitalized on this by finishing second in their qualifying group, just behind Iran. Among the team’s standout players is defender Abdukodir Khusanov, who joined Manchester City earlier this year and received a personal commendation during the celebration.

The country’s football federation has invested significantly in nurturing talent, aiming to reach the global stage. Coach Timur Kapadze praised his players’ dedication, saying the success was the result of years of effort and sacrifice.

He emphasized that the qualification wasn’t just a sporting achievement but a moment of national unity and pride. "Our players gave everything they had in every match," Kapadze said, acknowledging the team’s determination and resilience on their journey to the world’s most prestigious football tournament.
