USA, Belgium Set for Intriguing World Cup Last-16 Battle in Seattle

Posted : 06 July 2026

The United States will face Belgium in one of the most evenly matched fixtures of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 when the two sides meet in Seattle on Monday.

According to Opta's pre-match predictions, the contest is expected to be extremely close. The United States have a 37.2 percent chance of progressing, while Belgium are given a 36.5 percent chance, with the remaining possibility pointing towards extra time or penalties.

Mauricio Pochettino's side will look to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002. They enter the knockout stage with confidence after producing energetic displays during the group phase, where fast starts became one of their biggest strengths.

The Americans have scored three goals within the opening 11 minutes of matches at this tournament. Early strikes against Paraguay and Australia allowed them to dictate play and create more attacking opportunities by forcing opponents out of defensive positions.

Belgium, however, have shown resilience after falling behind during the tournament. Rudi Garcia's team recovered from an early deficit against Egypt and fought back from two goals down against Senegal before eventually advancing on penalties. Their ability to respond under pressure means an early American lead may not guarantee success.

While Belgium have looked vulnerable defensively, they remain one of the competition's most dangerous attacking teams. The Red Devils have produced some of the tournament's best attacking statistics through line-breaking passes, with Kevin De Bruyne playing a central role in unlocking opposition defences.

Belgium have also been clinical when winning possession high up the pitch. Although they do not press as aggressively as many other teams, they have created more shots from high turnovers than any remaining nation in the competition. That efficiency could prove decisive if the United States make mistakes while building from the back.

Pochettino's defence will therefore face one of its toughest tests of the tournament. The United States have limited opponents' attacking play for long spells, but containing Belgium's creative midfield and experienced forwards over 90 minutes will require discipline and concentration.

Both teams know what is at stake. Victory would secure a place in the quarter-finals against either Spain or Portugal, adding even greater significance to what promises to be one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage.

With home support behind them and momentum from an impressive group campaign, the United States will believe they can end a 24-year wait for a World Cup quarter-final appearance. Belgium, meanwhile, will rely on their experienced core to spoil the hosts' ambitions and continue their own pursuit of global glory.
