Unpaid $100,000 Promise Overshadows Super Falcons' WAFCON Campaign

Nigeria's Super Falcons are reportedly facing uncertainty off the pitch after the Federal Government is yet to fulfil the $100,000 cash reward promised to each player following the team's triumph at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The Falcons secured their 10th continental title after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final. During a reception in Abuja, the Federal Government announced that every player would receive $100,000 and a house at the Renewed Hope Estate, while members of the coaching crew and backroom staff were promised $50,000 and a house each.

Although the players recently received documents relating to the housing allocation, the promised cash rewards have yet to be paid, according to reports. Members of the squad are said to be unhappy with the continued delay, especially after receiving repeated assurances that payment would be made.

A team official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the players have continued to ask for clarity on when the money will be paid.

"The other day the Nigeria Football Federation officials told us that the money will hit our accounts soon, but that is what we have been told since last December," the official said.

The source also disclosed that senior players discouraged the squad from taking any action before Nigeria's opening match against Malawi, but frustration remains within the camp over the prolonged wait.

The reported delay mirrors a similar situation involving Nigeria's women's basketball team, D'Tigress. The African champions are also awaiting the payment of the cash rewards promised after winning the most recent FIBA Women's AfroBasket, despite receiving documentation for their allocated houses.

Despite the off-field distractions, the Super Falcons must now focus on their final Group C fixture against Egypt at the ongoing 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria's hopes of reaching the quarter-finals depend on securing a convincing victory after opening the tournament with a defeat to Malawi before bouncing back with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Zambia despite playing much of the game with 10 players.

Head coach Justin Madugu will also have to cope without defender Tosin Demehin and midfielder Jennifer Echegini. Demehin is suspended after her red card against Zambia, while Echegini misses the match after accumulating two yellow cards.

Christy Ucheibe is expected to partner veteran defender Osinachi Ohale in central defence, while captain Rasheedat Ajibade and Toni Payne are likely to play key roles as Nigeria chase the goals needed to secure a place in the knockout stage.
