Unity Cup 2025: Kicker FC Beat Gbayi FC 3-1

Posted : 05 June 2025

Kicker Football Club of Abuja defeated Gbayi FC of Kabusa 3-1 on Wednesday in a Group C opening match of the ongoing sixth edition of the Unity Cup 2025 at the Area 3 football pitch, Abuja.

The competition is organised by the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Football Coaches Council.

The match got off to a thrilling start as Andrew Yusuf of Gbayi FC scored the opening goal in the 3rd minute.

However, Kicker FC equalised in the 32nd minute through a well-placed shot by Silas Ubebe.

Kehinde Mustapha then scored from a free kick in the 39th minute to give Kicker FC a 2-1 lead.

After the halftime break, both teams tightened their defence, showing determination. Abdullahi Mohammed sealed the win for Kicker FC with a precise shot in the 53rd minute, ending the game 3-1.

Speaking after the match, Dare Adesomo, head coach of Kicker FC, said the result was a strong start to the tournament.

“I believe my team has the potential to win convincingly, given the quality of players we have.
However, we are still building, working on our weaknesses, and hope to come back stronger in our subsequent matches.
We reached the semifinals in 2024, and we are determined to go further this time around.
With five teams in Group C and only two spots available for the next round, every match counts,” he said.

Kicker FC are grouped alongside Gbayi FC, G-Medix FC, Eagles Wings Football Academy, and Young Professionals FC. They will face G-Medix FC at 12 p.m. on Friday at the Area 3 pitch.

In another match at the same venue, Eagles Wings Football Academy of Gwarinpa defeated Young Professionals FC 2-0. Jude Ogbonna scored in the 65th minute, while Job Daniel added a second in the 69th.

Rasheed Sadiq, head coach of Eagles Wings, praised the organisers, saying:

“It’s a good competition, and it’s encouraging to see the young ones coming up.
This is our third appearance. We exited at the group stage in our debut and made it to the quarterfinals in our second appearance.
I encourage my players to maintain their hard work and dedication.”

Meanwhile, defending champions Gwarinpa United FC suffered a 5-3 loss to Jubril FC in the tournament opener.

A total of 23 teams are participating in the tournament, which started on Tuesday and will end on June 23.
