Union Berlin Sacks Coach Bjelica, Appoints Grote as Interim Boss

Posted : 06 May 2024

Union Berlin made the decision to part ways with coach Nenad Bjelica after their recent 4-3 defeat at home to Bochum, appointing Marco Grote as the interim boss for the remainder of the season. With just two games left in the Bundesliga, the club sits precariously in 15th place, only one point ahead of Mainz, who are in the relegation playoff spot.

Grote, aged 51, will collaborate with current assistant coaches Marie-Louise Eta and Sebastian Boenig as they prepare for their upcoming league fixture against relegation rivals Cologne on Saturday. Expressing confidence in the team's ability to avoid relegation, Grote steps into the role with a determination to steer Union Berlin to safety.

Bjelica's tenure at Union Berlin, which began in November last year, came to an end after a series of disappointing results, including a nine-game losing streak that left the team rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

In contrast, Grote, who had been managing Union's U19s in the A-Junior Bundesliga, demonstrated his capability as an interim coach in November when he halted the losing streak with a 1-1 draw against Augsburg.

Despite their struggles this season, Union Berlin had enjoyed a successful campaign last year, finishing fourth in the league and even competing in the Champions League against Real Madrid. Their final match of the season is scheduled at home against seventh-placed Freiburg on May 18.
