Uganda and Tanzania, East African neighbors and rivals, will face each other for the first time at the Africa Cup of Nations finals on December 27 at Stade El Barid in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for 18:30 local time (17:30 GMT).
Uganda began their campaign with a 3–1 defeat to Tunisia, while Tanzania were beaten 2–1 by Nigeria in their opening fixture. Across all competitions, the two sides have met 61 times, with Uganda winning 33, Tanzania 12, and 16 ending in draws. Their most recent encounters were in 2023 AFCON qualifiers, with Tanzania winning both matches 1–0.
The rivalry dates back to September 8, 1964, when Tanzania defeated Uganda 3–0 in the East African Cup, while Uganda recorded their biggest win with a 5–0 triumph in the 1991 CECAFA Cup. Uganda midfielders Khalid Aucho and Steven Mukwala play in Tanzania for Singida Black Stars and Simba SC, respectively, with Aucho coached by Tanzania head coach Miguel Gamondi at club level.
Uganda’s AFCON history includes 17 defeats in 24 matches, conceding 40 goals in total, with Denis Omedi scoring their latest goal at 91 minutes and 25 seconds against Tunisia. Uganda have struggled to win their second group match after opening losses, a trend dating back to 1968.
Tanzania, meanwhile, have lost all four of their AFCON opening matches and seven of their 10 appearances overall. Despite this, they have scored in six of their 10 AFCON matches, including the opening game against Nigeria in 2025. Goalkeeper Zuberi Lukomo made eight saves against Nigeria, highlighting the team’s resilience despite the defeat.
Both teams will be seeking redemption in this historic East African showdown, with Uganda aiming to extend their dominance and Tanzania looking for their first AFCON success against their neighbors.
