Uganda Defeat Tanzania To Retain CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship Title

Posted : 25 June 2026

Uganda's U-17 Women's National Team successfully defended their CECAFA U-17 Women's Championship title after defeating hosts Tanzania 3-0 in the final at the KMC Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

The Teen Cranes produced another impressive display to complete an unbeaten tournament campaign. The East African champions won all five of their matches, scored 26 goals and finished the competition without conceding a single goal.

Led by head coach Sheryl Ulanda Botes, Uganda combined attacking quality with defensive discipline throughout the tournament. Their consistency once again underlined their growing dominance in women's youth football within the CECAFA region.

The final remained competitive during the early stages as Tanzania looked to use home support to their advantage. However, Uganda's quality began to show as the first half approached its closing stages.

The breakthrough arrived in the 38th minute when Justine Ayerango found the back of the net to give Uganda the lead. The goal lifted the defending champions and they quickly increased their advantage.

Just four minutes later, Brenda Nasaaka doubled Uganda's lead with a well-taken finish. The quick-fire goals handed the Teen Cranes a comfortable 2-0 advantage heading into the halftime interval and left the hosts with a difficult task in the second half.

Tanzania attempted to respond after the restart through attacking players Yasinta Kaluwa and Bahati Kizanguzi. However, Uganda's defence remained organised and disciplined throughout the contest.

Captain Jovia Nakirya played a key role at the back as Uganda continued to frustrate the hosts. Their resistance effectively ended Tanzania's hopes of a comeback.

Only three minutes into the second half, Flavia Yagala added Uganda's third goal of the evening. The strike extended the lead to 3-0 and placed the result firmly beyond doubt.

Goalkeeper Namuwaya Mayimuna also delivered another assured performance between the posts. She preserved Uganda's flawless defensive record and secured a fifth consecutive clean sheet of the tournament.

The victory confirmed Uganda as CECAFA U-17 Women's champions for the second consecutive edition. It also highlighted the progress being made in the country's women's youth development programme.

The awards ceremony was attended by CECAFA President Paulos Weldehaimanot Andemariam, CECAFA Executive Committee Member Doris Petra, Wallace Karia and CECAFA Interim Executive Director Jean Seninde.
