Nigeria’s Flamingos will be aiming to secure a place in the semi-finals of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 when they confront Venezuela in a high-stakes quarter-final encounter on Sunday.
The Nigerian youngsters head into the knockout fixture with renewed confidence after recovering impressively from an opening-day defeat to Poland to establish themselves as serious contenders for the title.
Coach Hakeem Busari’s side began their Group B campaign with a 2-1 loss to Poland but responded with a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico before producing an impressive 3-1 triumph over defending champions North Korea.
The Flamingos subsequently maintained their momentum in the Round of 16, overcoming Mexico in a hard-fought encounter to book their quarter-final ticket.
Sunday’s meeting presents Nigeria with an opportunity to move closer to the title and improve on their performance at the previous edition of the competition.
However, Venezuela will provide a stern examination of their ambitions, having demonstrated considerable resilience despite their inconsistent start to the tournament.
The South Americans opened their campaign with a 2-0 defeat to France but recovered to secure three points against Zambia before producing one of the knockout stage's biggest surprises with a 1-0 victory over Germany.
Their elimination of the European side underlines their ability to compete against highly rated opponents and presents a warning to the Nigerian team.
Venezuela's pedigree at the competition also makes them formidable opponents, having reached the semi-finals in their previous two appearances.
They will therefore be targeting a third consecutive last-four appearance, while Nigeria must produce another disciplined performance to prevent the South Americans from extending that impressive record.
For the Flamingos, defensive organisation, midfield control and clinical finishing could prove decisive against opponents who have gained considerable confidence from eliminating Germany.
Busari’s players will also need to maintain the attacking intensity that characterised their victories over North Korea and Mexico.
With a semi-final ticket at stake, both teams have plenty to play for, but Nigeria will be determined to sustain their impressive recovery and keep their championship ambitions alive.
The quarter-final encounter is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time (7 p.m. Nigerian time) on Sunday, Nov. 1, at Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Rabat.
