U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup: Olowookere Promises Early Prep for Flamingos
Posted : 06 June 2025
Bankole Olowookere, head coach of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, has promised early and adequate preparations ahead of the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Olowookere acknowledged that Nigeria had been drawn into a difficult group following Wednesday’s official draw held in Rabat.
The Flamingos are placed in Group D, alongside France, Canada, and Samoa. “We’ve been in Morocco since Monday, working both before and after the draw,” Olowookere said. “Now that the groups are out, we must intensify our efforts and maintain a high level of preparation.”
The coach emphasized that while the group is tough, the Flamingos are ready to rise to the occasion. “This is a World Cup—every team is coming prepared, including the hosts. We can’t take any opponent for granted,” he noted. “If we meet teams we can easily beat, we’ll be thankful to God. But we’re ready to face the best.”
He added that the team is focused on making Nigeria proud. “We’re working every day to achieve our goals. We want to give Nigerians something to cheer about.” The 2025 tournament marks Nigeria’s eighth appearance in the global competition. The Flamingos previously achieved a historic bronze medal finish in 2022. This year’s edition will feature an expanded lineup of 24 teams, the first in the tournament’s history, which debuted 17 years ago in New Zealand.
