Tyrique George: Nigeria, England, and African powerhouse contenders for Chelsea POTY

Posted : 06 May 2025

Ghana has now entered the race to secure Tyrique George's international future, adding another layer to the competition for the Chelsea Academy Player of the Season. In addition to being eligible to play for Nigeria and England, the talented forward also has the option to represent Ghana, a four-time African champion, through his mother.

Born in London, George’s eligibility for the Nigerian national team comes through his father, who is Nigerian. This connection makes him a potential asset for the Super Eagles, although the English Football Association (FA) is currently seen as the front-runner in securing his services.

At 19, George has already been capped by England at youth levels, featuring for their U19 squad. He is likely to be promoted to the U20 team soon, with the possibility of a quicker move to the U21s, similar to Arsenal’s Ethan Nwaneri, who made headlines as one of the youngest players in Premier League history.

Despite his strong ties to England, sources reveal that Nigeria's national team coach, Eric Chelle, has not yet reached out to George regarding a potential switch of allegiances to the Super Eagles. This leaves the door open for further discussions, should George decide to explore representing Nigeria.

Interestingly, George shares his agent with several Super Eagles players, including Ola Aina, Alex Iwobi, Joe Aribo, Josh Maja, and Terem Moffi. This connection could play a role in the future conversations about his international future, particularly as the Super Eagles look to secure his services.

This season, George has been impressive, contributing six goals in 22 appearances for Chelsea’s first team. His performances have only heightened the interest from various national teams, adding pressure to his decision-making process.

Nigeria’s senior squad has seen several players, such as Ademola Lookman, Iwobi, and Aina, make similar switches in the past, having initially represented England at youth levels before committing to the Super Eagles. This historical trend might influence George's eventual choice of international allegiance.
