Twist of Fate as Aweroro, Adepoju Face Former Club Ikorodu City FC

The 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 3 sees an intriguing South West derby as Shooting Stars SC of Ibadan welcome Ikorodu City FC. The fixture carries added significance due to recent movements in management and staff between the two clubs, creating a “twist of fate” scenario.

 

During the current transfer window, Shooting Stars made headlines by recruiting key personnel from their southwest rival. Chief among them is Nuruden Aweroro, the tactician who guided Ikorodu City to a standout season last year with his attacking and fluid style of play. Joining him is former Sporting Director Tobi Adepoju, now overseeing operations at the Oluyole Warriors. Both men will confront their former club this weekend, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the derby.

 

The derby is further intensified by the history between the clubs. In their last NPFL encounter at the Lekan Salami Stadium, tensions escalated after a goalless draw, prompting the NPFL board to fine Shooting Stars N5 million for fans’ misconduct. Nigerian Army operatives had to intervene to ensure the safe exit of Ikorodu City’s players and officials.

 

As things stand, Ikorodu City FC have secured two points from their opening two matches—a draw away to Kwara United and a home stalemate against El-Kanemi Warriors. Meanwhile, Shooting Stars, with Aweroro at the helm, are seeking maximum points at home after a restructuring effort led by the arrival of their new manager, Lekan Salami. Aweroro had previously led Ikorodu City to a fourth-place NPFL finish and a President Federation Cup semi-final, while Adepoju witnessed the turbulence of the last South West derby firsthand.

 

This fixture promises a high-stakes showdown, with both sides eager to assert dominance in the early stages of the 2025/2026 season.
