Turkiye and Paraguay Seek First World Cup Points in Crucial Group D Showdown

Posted : 19 June 2026

Turkiye and Paraguay will battle for their first points of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they meet in a crucial Group D fixture at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara on Saturday morning. Both sides suffered disappointing defeats in their opening matches and know that another setback could seriously damage their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

Turkiye entered the tournament with expectations of being one of the competition’s surprise packages, but their campaign began on a frustrating note with a 2-0 defeat to Australia in Vancouver. Despite controlling possession for long periods and creating several scoring opportunities, the Turkish side struggled to convert their chances and lacked the cutting edge needed to break down the Australian defence.

The Crescent-Stars were also exposed on the counterattack, with Australia taking full advantage through the pace and movement of players such as Nestor Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe. The result left coach Vincenzo Montella searching for improvements ahead of a must-win encounter.

Montella remains confident that his team can recover from the disappointing start. The Italian tactician stressed the importance of remaining focused and maintaining belief in their approach, insisting that one defeat should not alter the team's overall objectives in the tournament.

Paraguay's opening match proved even more difficult, as they were comprehensively beaten 4-1 by co-hosts the United States in Los Angeles. An early own goal from Damian Bobadilla put the South Americans under pressure, and they never fully recovered as the Americans dominated proceedings.

The United States added further goals through Folarin Balogun, who scored twice, and Gio Reyna, leaving Paraguay with plenty to reflect on before their second group-stage match.

Coach Gustavo Alfaro acknowledged that his team must improve in several areas if they are to remain competitive. He emphasized that defensive discipline and hard work alone will not be enough at World Cup level, calling for greater tactical understanding and overall quality.

Paraguay will look to key attacking figures such as Julio Enciso and Antonio Sanabria to provide inspiration. Enciso was among the brighter performers in the defeat to the United States, creating Paraguay’s lone goal and consistently threatening the opposition defence.

For Turkiye, much of the creative responsibility will fall on captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu. The experienced midfielder showed flashes of quality against Australia but will be expected to have a greater influence in the attacking third as his side seeks a positive response.

Historically, there is little separating the two nations. Their only previous meeting came in a friendly match in 1995, which ended in a scoreless draw. Saturday’s encounter will therefore represent a rare competitive clash between the teams and could prove decisive in shaping the outcome of Group D.

With both sides desperate to avoid a second consecutive defeat, the match promises to be a tense and fiercely contested battle as Turkiye and Paraguay fight to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
