Tuchel Relishes Argentina Challenge as England Chase First World Cup Final Since 1966

England manager Thomas Tuchel says his players are embracing the opportunity to face Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinals, insisting the occasion brings excitement rather than added pressure. The German coach is aiming to guide England to their first World Cup final since their triumph in 1966.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's showdown in Atlanta, Tuchel admitted the magnitude of the fixture naturally creates nerves but stressed that his squad remains highly motivated. He described the encounter as one between two of football's most iconic nations, with a rich history that makes it one of the tournament's standout matches.

England have been driven throughout the competition by Jude Bellingham and captain Harry Kane, who have each scored six goals to spearhead the Three Lions' attack. The semifinal will also mark the first time 39-year-old Lionel Messi has faced England in his remarkable international career.

The two countries have met five times previously at World Cups, producing several unforgettable moments. Their rivalry is best remembered for Argentina's 2-1 victory in the 1986 quarterfinal, when Diego Maradona scored both the controversial "Hand of God" goal and one of the greatest individual goals in football history. Argentina also eliminated England on penalties at the 1998 World Cup after David Beckham's red card.

Despite the history surrounding the fixture, Tuchel said he has no intention of using past encounters to motivate his players. Instead, he wants his team to remain focused on controlling their own performance while recognising the significance of the occasion for supporters of both nations.

The England coach revealed that his entire squad trained ahead of the semifinal and confirmed midfielder Declan Rice has recovered from illness and is available for selection. Defender Jarell Quansah, however, will miss the match through suspension.

Tuchel reserved special praise for Messi, admitting it is difficult to find words to describe the Argentine captain's brilliance. He highlighted Argentina's experienced core of players and credited Lionel Scaloni for building a cohesive squad that has consistently performed well in major tournaments.

While acknowledging the size of the challenge, Tuchel expressed confidence that England are prepared for the test. He noted that neither team has enjoyed an easy route to the semifinals, with England overcoming difficult knockout matches against DR Congo, Mexico and Norway.

Reflecting on his first World Cup as a coach, Tuchel said successful tournament runs are rarely straightforward. He believes England have yet to produce their best football and expects the semifinal against Argentina to bring out the highest level from his players as they pursue a place in the final.
