Troost-Ekong Questions Nwabali's Exit From Chippa United

Posted : 25 June 2026

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has expressed concern over Stanley Nwabali's decision to leave Chippa United before securing a move to another club.

Nwabali established himself as Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and further enhanced his reputation at the 2025 edition in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third. His performances attracted attention from clubs across Africa and Europe, raising expectations of a high-profile transfer.

In February 2026, the goalkeeper and Chippa United agreed to terminate his contract four months before its scheduled expiration. The move was intended to allow him pursue a more competitive challenge and improved career opportunities.

At the time, the decision appeared logical given his growing profile and reported transfer interest. However, the anticipated move failed to materialise, leaving the 30-year-old without a club for several months.

Speaking about the situation, Troost-Ekong suggested that remaining with Chippa United until the end of the season might have been a better option.

"Obviously, I can't speak for Stanley, but based on how things have unfolded now, maybe it would've been a better decision to remain with Chippa," Troost-Ekong said.

The former Super Eagles defender praised Nwabali's development and contributions to the national team. He described the goalkeeper as an important figure who has consistently delivered strong performances for Nigeria.

"I think he's been the soldier we need for the national team. He had a fantastic AFCON twice in a row, which is very difficult to do," Troost-Ekong added.

According to the former Watford and Udinese defender, one of the biggest challenges was the timing of Nwabali's departure. Although he became a free agent, the termination occurred outside an active transfer window, making it difficult for clubs to register him immediately.

Troost-Ekong revealed that he has remained in contact with the goalkeeper and is confident that a suitable opportunity will emerge during the summer transfer window.

"So, it's been tough. I've spoken to Stanley a lot as well. I know he's been training and keeping fit. Hopefully, there's going to be a good opportunity that comes his way now in the summer," he said.

Nwabali's lack of club football also affected his international prospects. Despite maintaining his fitness levels, he was omitted from Nigeria's squads earlier this year as head coach Eric Chelle prioritised goalkeepers playing regular competitive matches.

Francis Uzoho subsequently reclaimed the number one position, while Maduka Okoye strengthened his role within the squad. Arthur Okonkwo also emerged as a new option after receiving his first Super Eagles call-up.

Nigeria will return to competitive action in September when qualification matches for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations begin.
