Transfer Buzz: Premier League clubs eye Kalvin Phillips, Anthony Martial exit, Chelsea's potential sales and signings

Posted : 12 December 2023

Several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, are expressing interest in Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled to establish himself under Pep Guardiola. Phillips, a former Leeds United player, has been linked with a move in the January transfer window, and Manchester United is among the potential suitors. However, Phillips' history with Leeds, a fierce rival of Manchester United, might influence his decision.

Manchester United is preparing for the departure of striker Anthony Martial, with the club deciding not to renew his contract. Martial could be sold in January, or he might leave as a free agent at the end of the season if not transferred. Erik ten Hag, the United manager, previously hinted at ongoing contract talks with Martial, but the French forward is now set to leave Old Trafford.

Chelsea is considering the sale of midfielder Conor Gallagher to raise funds and balance the books after a year of significant spending. With 18 months left on his contract, Gallagher's departure could happen in the upcoming transfer window if a new deal is not agreed upon. Some figures within Chelsea argue that selling Gallagher makes financial sense, addressing compliance with Premier League spending rules and squad deficiencies.

In the transfer market, Chelsea is reportedly eyeing strikers Victor Osimhen or Ivan Toney and may also target a central defender. Manager Mauricio Pochettino aims to strengthen the squad in the winter transfer window, with the strategy likely to include balancing incoming signings with outgoings. Chelsea's priorities include securing a prolific goalscorer and a dominant central defender, with potential targets such as Osimhen and Toney posing challenges due to wage considerations.
