Tragedy hits Katsina United as new player, Ozoh, dies during pre-season friendly

Katsina United FC have been plunged into mourning following the death of their newly signed player, Ozoh Chinedu, after a medical emergency during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes FC.

The tragic incident occurred at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina while both teams were engaged in the preparatory fixture ahead of the 2026/27 football season.

Ozoh, who recently joined Katsina United after previously featuring for Kano Pillars FC, reportedly suffered a medical emergency during the match and was immediately attended to before being taken to K-Dara Specialist Hospital in Katsina for further treatment.

Despite efforts to save his life, the player reportedly died in the early hours of Tuesday.

His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Katsina United, with teammates, coaches, club officials, supporters and members of the wider football community struggling to come to terms with the loss.

The tragedy is particularly painful for the club as Ozoh had only recently joined the team and was expected to play a role in its preparations and campaign in the new season.

The circumstances surrounding the player’s death have not been fully established, while further information is expected from the club, his family or relevant medical authorities.

Ozoh’s death has once again cast a sombre mood over the football community, cutting short the career of a player who had only just begun a new chapter with Katsina United.
