Paul Onuachu has received a positive injury update from Trabzonspor interim coach Huseyin Cimsir after the Nigerian striker was forced off during Sunday's 5-0 Turkish Super Lig victory over Genclerbirligi. Cimsir said he did not believe the injury was serious, offering hope that Onuachu could return soon.
Onuachu was withdrawn in the 43rd minute after sustaining the injury during a physical challenge. He was replaced by new signing Franculino Dju, who later completed the scoring in Trabzonspor's emphatic victory.
The injury came after an excellent performance from the 32-year-old forward. Onuachu scored twice, finding the net in the fifth and 22nd minutes as Trabzonspor raced into a commanding lead at Papara Park. Mohamed Salah added a penalty before Ernest Muçi and Dju completed the 5-0 victory.
The brace was particularly important for Onuachu after a difficult start to the campaign. The former Genk striker had gone five appearances across all competitions without scoring before finally opening his account against Genclerbirligi.
Speaking after the match, Cimsir played down concerns surrounding the striker's condition. “I don't think it's a very important thing. There is no troubled situation,” the Trabzonspor coach said when asked about Onuachu's injury.
The update will come as a relief to Trabzonspor and Nigeria, although the exact recovery timeline remains unclear. Onuachu is expected to undergo further assessment before a final decision is made on his availability for upcoming matches.
Trabzonspor's next league fixture is away against Konyaspor in the fifth round of the Turkish Super Lig. The Nigerian will also be hoping to recover in time for Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau later this month.
The victory lifted Trabzonspor to seven points from their opening four league matches. Onuachu's availability could be important as the club looks to build momentum after a difficult opening period that included a coaching change and European disappointment.
