Tottenham Players Miss Out on Medals During Europa League Ceremony Due to Shortage

Posted : 22 May 2025

During the celebrations following Tottenham’s Europa League victory, three key players were left without their winner’s medals on the pitch. Manager Ange Postecoglou was the first to receive his medal from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin after Spurs secured a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Several players, including injured James Maddison, Timo Werner, Lucas Bergvall, and Will Lankshear—who spent part of the season on loan—were also given their medals during the ceremony.

However, club captain Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero, and Rodrigo Bentancur were forced to wait until they returned to the dressing room to receive their medals. UEFA explained that the shortage was caused by an unexpected increase in the number of team members attending the ceremony, including injured players who had not been initially counted. The governing body apologized for the oversight and assured that the missing medals were promptly handed over in the dressing room.

According to UEFA regulations, both the winning and losing teams receive 50 medals each, with clubs deciding how to distribute them among players and staff. Ahead of the ceremony, UEFA had prepared 30 medals for presentation on the pitch, anticipating only the matchday squad and the manager. However, the inclusion of additional team members meant the medals ran short during the celebration.

Son, who acted as team captain, waited patiently at the end of the line to receive the trophy and lead his teammates in lifting it. Although he didn’t get a medal at that moment and was limited to a congratulatory hug from Ceferin, Son was later seen wearing a winner’s medal—the first major trophy medal of his senior career, both at club and international levels.
