Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a deal worth £85 million, strengthening their squad with one of the Premier League's most sought-after young talents.
The north London club secured the 21-year-old after overcoming competition from Manchester United, who chose not to match Tottenham's offer. Spurs' proposal consists of a guaranteed £85 million, with no performance-related add-ons, making it enough to convince West Ham to sanction the transfer.
Fernandes quickly became Tottenham's priority midfield target after their attempt to sign Sandro Tonali came to an end. Newcastle United rejected an £80 million bid for the Italian international, who remains under a long-term contract after recently extending his stay at St James' Park.
The move continues an aggressive summer recruitment drive by Tottenham. The club has already strengthened several areas of the squad with the arrivals of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, defenders Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers, as well as Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who joined from Brighton in a deal worth £52 million.
Adding a central midfielder was viewed as the next major objective, and Fernandes emerged as the ideal candidate despite West Ham's recent struggles. Although the Hammers have suffered consecutive Premier League relegations, the Portuguese midfielder attracted significant interest from across Europe due to his performances and long-term potential.
Manchester United were among the clubs monitoring Fernandes, while Paris Saint-Germain also expressed interest. However, United ultimately decided against pursuing the deal after concluding that the asking price exceeded their valuation of the player.
Fernandes reportedly remained open to several options during the transfer process, with his agent, Jorge Mendes, holding discussions with both Tottenham and Manchester United before Spurs finalized the agreement.
United's recruitment strategy this summer has focused on disciplined spending, with club officials determined to avoid overpaying for transfer targets. While the Old Trafford side admired Fernandes' qualities, they believed maintaining their valuation policy was the correct approach and were also uncertain about the player's desire to join the club.
Instead, Manchester United have already agreed a £35 million deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, although his arrival has been delayed following a late call-up to Brazil's World Cup squad.
As pre-season preparations approach, United's squad has seen little change. Apart from the departures of out-of-contract players Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, the core of the team remains intact. Plans to sell Manuel Ugarte have also been postponed after the midfielder suffered a serious injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup, while speculation surrounding the futures of Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount has been dismissed by sources close to the club.
For Tottenham, securing Fernandes represents another major statement in an ambitious summer transfer window as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.
