Tonic FC have completed a remarkable underdog story by winning the fourth edition of the 1xCup grassroots football tournament after defeating Young Strikers FC on penalties in Lagos.
The Ikorodu-based debutants secured the trophy on Saturday, October 31, following a goalless draw at the Inspire Sports Arena in Cappa, Oshodi. They eventually prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout to claim the championship and the ₦10 million top prize.
Managed by Oladipupo Abiola, Tonic FC entered the competition without being considered among the leading favourites. Their qualification campaign was particularly difficult, as they needed penalty shootouts to overcome Agbede Supreme FC and Vino Gano.
The team also struggled to establish dominance during the group stage, recording three consecutive draws. However, their performances improved significantly when the knockout rounds began.
Tonic FC first eliminated 36 Lion FC with a 2-1 victory in the round of 16. They maintained that scoreline against Joy Cometh FC in the quarter-finals before defeating JP Young Stars FC 2-1 in the semi-finals.
Their final opponents, Young Strikers FC, had demonstrated considerable attacking strength throughout the competition. The Lagos Island-based side scored 21 goals in eight matches, with 17-year-old forward Lawal Muiz contributing six goals.
However, the final proved considerably more difficult for the attacking side. Both teams adopted cautious approaches, limiting their opponents' opportunities and keeping the contest goalless throughout regulation time.
Tonic FC goalkeeper Femi Adegboyega eventually emerged as the match winner during the penalty shootout. He saved two attempts from Young Strikers, while his teammates successfully converted all four of their kicks.
Abdulahi Jamiu converted the decisive penalty to confirm Tonic FC's historic triumph. Young Strikers settled for the runners-up position and received ₦5 million alongside their silver medals.
The third-place encounter also required penalties to determine the winner. Collins Edwin SC recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with JP Young Stars FC, but the latter prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to claim the bronze medals and ₦3 million.
Former Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo attended the final alongside Lagos State Sports Commission Director-General Lekan Fatodu and other prominent sports personalities.
Ighalo praised the organisers for investing in grassroots football and emphasised the importance of competitions that provide opportunities for young Nigerian players.
"We need tournaments like this to spot good players and find the next Victor Osimhen," he said.
The 2026 competition featured 100 clubs from five divisions across Lagos State, with a total prize pool of ₦20 million. Organised by 1xBet, the tournament has also provided a pathway into professional football, with more than 30 players from previous editions reportedly progressing into professional careers.
The organisers have scheduled the individual awards ceremony for November 6, when the tournament's Most Valuable Player, top scorer, best goalkeeper and other outstanding performers will be recognised.
